Dr. Nitin Indurkhya will present the online short course "Text Mining" at statistics.com June 24 - July 22, assisted by Sholom M. Weiss, Tong Zhang and Fred Damerau. Text mining applications are growing rapidly: analysts are now mining intelligence information, Medline, web data, data from surveys and forms, and more. This course will introduce the essential techniques of text mining, understood here as the extension of data mining's standard predictive methods to unstructured text. These standard techniques will be discussed, and the workshop will devote considerable attention to the data preparation and handling methods that are needed to transform unstructured text into a form in which it can be mined. Dr. Indurkhya is the co-author of "Text Mining" (Wiley), and professor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Univ. of New South Wales (Australia). He is also the founder and president of Data-Miner Pty Ltd, a data-mining consulting and education company. Drs. Weiss, Zhang and Damerau are all with IBM Research and are all co- authors of "Text Mining." The course takes place over the internet, at statistics.com in a series of 4 weekly lessons and assignments. Course participants interact directly with the instructor via a private discussion board. Participate at your own convenience; there are no set times when you are required to be online.
