"Integrating Emotion and Cognition in Formal Models"

Topic Description :
The main purpose of Artificial Intelligence is to mimic human intelligence, in all its aspects. So, since the beginning of AI, numerous researches have aimed at modeling the cognitive processes identified in the human mind and artificial systems that learn, plan, make decisions, reason, have been designed.
Despite Minsky's famous remark in his Society of Mind dating back to 1985, " the question is not whether intelligent machines can have any emotions, but whether machines can be intelligent without any emotions ", the attempts to endow machines with emotions, i.e. to conceive computational models taking emotions into account, are rather recent. Less efforts have been devoted to modeling emotional behaviours than purely rational intelligent behaviours. In particular, classical types of reasoning in AI like deduction, induction, classification or case-based reasoning, for example, have been intensively studied.
However, what would be the influence of a reasoner's emotions on his/her reasoning ? And, conversely, would it make sense to study the influence of reasoning on a reasoner's emotions and why ? If so, how could it be possible to model such an influence ?
This track aims to try and answer these questions and contributions from computer scientists, but also from psychologists and philosophers are strongly encouraged.
Papers addressing the following issues would be particularly welcomed :
- Characterization and modeling of emotions and moods ;
- Representation and management of conflicting emotions in the reasoner ;
- Modeling of the reasoner's own " internal state " that could influence his/her emotions or could be influenced by them : goals, plans, intentions ;
- Modeling of affect appraisal processes and the factors that influence affect generation ;
- Modeling of Interactions of affect and meta-cognition ;
- Formal definition of different types of reasoning taking the reasoner's emotions into account.
This list is not exclusive provided that the contributions are relevant to the definition of the track specified above

Paper Review and Publication
Only full papers will be considered for the track. Submitted papers will be reviewed by two program committee members. An author for an accepted paper is expected to present the paper in the track. Papers accepted for the track will be published in the FLAIRS 2003 Conference Proceedings.
